Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of ferritin concentrations (serum or plasma) for detecting iron deficiency To determine the diagnostic accuracy of ferritin concentrations (serum or plasma) for detecting iron overload in primary and secondary iron loading syndromes To determine the diagnostic accuracy of ferritin to determine iron deficiency at current WHO cut-off values (WHO 2011b): <12 ng/mL <15 ng/mL and <30 ng/mL; as well as other commonly utilised cut-offs To assess the diagnostic accuracy of ferritin to determine iron overload at putative cut-off values such as 150ng/mL in females and 200 ng/mL in males (Bacon 2011; WHO 2001); 200 ng/mL and 300 ng/mL in males and females (Brissot 2009), and 500 ng/mL in mild iron overload (Brissot 2009)
