Abstract

Objective The aim of our study was to investigate the role of MMP-9 in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and compare it with the other atherosclerotic risk factors. Design & Methods Our study was comprised of 23 AMI, 6 unstable angina pectoris (USAP) patients and 10 healthy subjects as controls. MMP-9, CK-MB and AST levels were determined in blood samples obtained at their admission to the emergency department and serially at 12th, 24th and 48th hours. Results According to our results MMP9 levels at admission were significantly higher in AMI patients (149 ± 51.6 pg/ml) than USAP patients (102.8 ± 35.6 pg/ml) and the control group (69.1 ± 23.1 pg/ml) ( p p p Conclusion According to our results MMP-9 increase pattern might be a potential follow up marker in AMI.
