Abstract

Objective The present study was undertaken to evaluate the levels of MDA as a marker of oxidative stress and activities of PON1 which may have a role as an antioxidant in Behcet's Disease (BD). Design & Methods In the present study, 16 patients of BD (7 male, 9 female, mean age: 31.26 ± 16.67) and 17 healthy individuals (7 male, 10 female, mean age: 32.7 ± 15.53) were included in the evaluation. Patients with BD were identified at the Dermatology Clinic of Dicle University Medicine Faculty Hospital. Diagnosis of BD was performed according to the criteria of the International Study Group on Behcet's Disease. Results In BD group, the medians of serum PON1 and MDA levels were 82.63 U/L and 2.25 nmol/ml, respectively. In the control group, median serum PON1 and MDA levels were 122.99 U/L and 1.43 nmol/ml, respectively. There was a statistically significant decrease in serum PON1 levels (82.63 ± 24.42 versus 122.99 ± 31.28; p p p > 0.05) and MDA levels (2.29 ± 0.71 versus 2.14 ± 0.24; p > 0.05) did not show any statistically significant difference. Conclusion Endothelial damage and increased polymorphonuclear leukocyte activity in the BD could result in decreased PON1 activity and increased MDA.
