Abstract

Six pony foals, 10 to 17 days of age, were each given gentamicin sulfate (2 mg/kg, IM). Serial blood samples were collected for 24 hours for determination of gentamicin sulfate concentration. Peak mean serum concentration was 6.85 g/ml in the first serum sample at 15 minutes. The overall elimination rate averaged 0.26±0.027/hr. The mean biological half-life was 2.81±0.279/hr. The apparent volume of distribution based on area under the serum concentration vs. time curve was 516±58 ml/kg, and at steady state it was 335±31 ml/kg. The systemic clearance of gentamicin was 2.15±0.172 ml/min/kg.
