Abstract

Serum free and ester cholesterol fractions have been estimated in sixty eight mentally retarded patients, and regardless of the total cholesterol values, the proportions of the two fractions have been found to be normal. Plasma triglycerides have also been shown to be low by means of estimation of the serum total esterified fatty acid. Lipoprotein electrophoresis revealed that serum lipoproteins were reduced in these patients. The metabolism of cholesterol fractions is discussed, but no explanation for low serum cholesterol values in mentally retarded patients has been found.
