Abstract
Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (C.S.F.) magnesium levels were estimated in 20 control cases, 32 cases of tubercular meningitin (TBM)and 20 cases of pyogenic meningitis. Normally the C.S.F. magnesium was higher than serum magnesium which was independent of age or sex, where as the serum and C.S.F. magnesium levels were low initially in both forms of meningitis and reach normal value upon recovery. The serum and C.S.F. values gradually rise as the clinical and biochemical recovery proceeds. Magnesium estimation helps to know the progress of the disease and the response to treatment. It is not possible to differentiate tubercular from pyogenic meningitis on the basis of magnesium estimation only.
