Abstract

Serum and ascitic fluid protein electrophoresis and immunoglobulin levels were studied in 56 patients with ascites secondary to advanced gynecologic malignancy. The most significant abnormalities observed in serum protein electrophoresis were decreased protein and albumin and elevated levels of α-1-, α-2-, and β-globulins. A statistically significant correlation was found between serum and ascitic fluid protein and albumin concentration and each one of the globulin fractions. The serum concentrations of immunoglobulins G, A, and M were unchanged as compared to the normal range for healthy adults. Immunoglobulins were detected in all ascitic fluid samples tested. A tendency toward increased IgA levels in ascitic fluid was observed.
