Abstract

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute phase plasma protein. In addition, the 104-amino acid SAA molecule is the precursor to the 76-amino acid amyloid A protein (AA), the chief constituent of reactive amyloid deposits. Heterogeneity with respect to amino acid composition, sequence, and Chromatographie behavior has been reported for SAA and AA. The apparent polymorphic primary structure of SAA has lead to the hypothesis that particular SAA gene structures may be related to the development of amyloidosis. One approach to testing this hypothesis would be to look for SAA sequences common to reactive amyloid patients. Such a study would be facilitated by knowing the total number of genes a human has for SAA.
