Abstract

IT HAS been considered that the thyroidal function takes an important role in the growth of young chickens and the feeding of thyroactive substances has been tried in order to accelerate the rate of growth of chickens (Parker, 1943; Turner et al., 1944; Irwin et al., 1943; Wheeler et al., 1948; Boone et al., 1950). Since there had been observed significant breed differences in the thyroxine secretion rate of growing chickens according to Shultze and Turner as quoted by Turner (1948), and also the heritabilities of the thyroidal weight were found considerably high (Shaklee and Knox, 1956; Matsumoto et al., 1958), selection based on the thyroidal activity was attempted to produce fast growing strains (Premachandra et al., 1959).However, it would be reasonable that much difficulty be expected in this field unless the relationship is clear between the thyroid hormone and metabolic pattern which is linked with the growth in …
