Abstract

Introduction. TGF-β1 is the master cytokine in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis. Inflammatory and mesenchymal cells, including hepatic stellate cells, have been identified as the principal source of this cytokine, however growing evidence also supports the ability of parenchymal hepatocytes to produce TGF-β1. Recently, a direct correlation between TGF-β1 and the ov-serpin SCCA has been reported in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, whose pathological features recall cirrhosis pathogenesis.
