Abstract
The serous body cavities are mesothelial-lined potential spaces that surround the lungs (pleura), heart (pericardium), and the abdomen and pelvis (peritoneum). Normally, movement of these organs is facilitated by a small amount of fluid, an ultrafiltrate of plasma. When production and resorption of this plasma ultrafiltrate are not properly balanced, fluid may accumulate within 1 or more serous cavities, resulting in a true fluid-filled cavity (effusion).1
