Abstract
Editor: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem and represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries like India. Approximately 30 % of the world’s population or about two billion persons have serological evidence of either current or past infection with hepatitis B virus. Their transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with blood, intravenous injections, transfusion of blood and components, and sexual relations. As per World Health Organization guidelines, countries have been classified on the basis of endemicity of HBV infection into high (8 % or more), intermediate (2 % to 7 %), or low (<2 %) incidence countries. India comes under the intermediatetohighendemicitycategory.Itismandatorytotestallblood
