Abstract

Summary The cause of failure of a vascularised split-skin graft raised from its bed by a seroma is due to epithelialisation of its dermal surface by proliferation of the cells of the divided hair follicles. Simple evacuation of the serome will not result in adherence of the graft after the fourth post-operative day and the epithelium must be curetted off the dermal surface before the raised graft will adhere to its bed. The clinical findings follow exactly the findings in tissue culture experiments.
