Abstract

THE study of the immunity of chickens to infection with Hemophilus gallinarum has been hampered by the lack of serologic tests. Only recently Kato et al. (1962) reported on the use of agglutination and complement fixation tests for diagnosis of infection due to H. gallinarum, and Page (1962) reported briefly on the use of a plate agglutination test to classify isolates of H. gallinarum into antigenic groups. As early as 1934 De Blieck (1934) showed that chickens that recovered from an infection of H. gallinarum had a substantial degree of immunity. This observation was also confirmed by Schalm and Beach (1936). Page et al. (1963) inoculated chickens with a bacterin of H. gallinarum and determined their degree of immunity to challenge with a virulent H. gallinarum, but he did not follow their serologic reaction. In this paper we describe the serologic response of chickens to experimental infection with H. gallinarum,…
