Abstract
This article focuses on sermons in the age of the American and French Revolution. The most sensational sermons of the period are that of Henry Sacheverell in 1709 or that Benjamin Hoadly in 1717, each of which had sparked a political crisis. Several sermons achieved national prominence between 1770 and 1800. In particular, Thomas Nowell’s sermon before the House of Commons on 30 January 1772; Richard Price’s Discourse preached to the Revolution Society at the Old Jewry Chapel, London, in 1789; and Samuel Horsley’s dramatic tirade against the French regicide on 30 January 1793.
