Abstract

The interuniversity Progress Test in Medicine is a measuring instrumentconsisting of about 200 test items, to measure the development ofmedical students' knowledge during their studies. The Progress Testconsists of 4 tests per academic year. Future versions of the ProgressTest will likely be based on computerised administration of the test. One ofthe main goals of the Progress Test is to counter the so-called 'learningto-the-test' effect. Additional benefits are that students and teachers getdetailed feedback about command of knowledge and where omissions inknowledge or the curriculum exist at multiple institutions. A Progress Test for dental education in the Netherlands can easily be conceived becausethe goals of the Progress Test fit well with the common framework(Raamplan Tandheelkunde) shared among the current three dentalprogrammes. The current 'Overalltoets' (general test) of ACTA (academiccentre for dentistry Amsterdam) could form a foundation for starting aProgress Test for dental education.
