Abstract
Abstract Chetverikov was a Russian (Soviet) geneticist and lepidopterologist, who significantly contributed to the growth of Darwinian evolutionary theory. He saw his primary task as overcoming a gap between Mendelism and Darwinian selectionism. In 1926, Chetverikov published his revolutionary paper ‘On Certain Features of the Evolutionary Process from the Viewpoint of Modem Genetics’, which laid the foundation for population genetics, along with the works by Ronald Fisher, Sewall Wright, and John Haldane. Chetverikov made significant efforts to develop a research programme synthesising biometric, naturalist and genetic approaches within a Darwinian framework. He played a special role in the history of Russian and Soviet biology, because he stood at the very cradle of the Russian (Soviet) school of evolutionary genetics.
