Abstract
According to numerous Lithuanian studies, there is a significant increase in population with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This incurable disease requires not only medical treatment and glucose control, but also a healthy lifestyle, strong changes in the cultural model. The main purpose of this work is to identify diabetes nurse‘s influence on patients with diabetes learning about the disease and their quality of life with reference to the patient based care. Methods. Survey was conducted at the Lithuanian Diabetes Association (LDA) from 1 March 2013 till 20 December 2013. The anonymous questionnaire was. Results. The respondents 115 (45 perc.) indicated that their current quality of life was average. Four out of ten reported that their life would have been better if they did not have DM. There was a significant correlation between learning how to stay healthy and patient knowledge about diabetes nurse provides specialized nursing care ( r=0,138, p= p<0,05. Most patients rated diabetes nurses education capability with the patients as being good or excellent. Conclusions. The overall quality of life of the respondents averaged 0.47 ± 0.056 points. Most respondents agreed that everyone should be aware of and learn about theirs health condition. Diabetes nurse initiates patient education, respondents were satisfied with the diabetes nurse services.
