Abstract

Using the case example of an analytic relationship that developed unfavorably, this chapter introduces the technical concept of sequentiality of associations that, according to Morgenthaler, is crucial for any successful analysis. The analytic relationship in the case presented is marked by transference-confusion, expressed in a reproachful analysand-analyst relationship and the analyst’s inability to unclench the analytic situation. Pointing out that the reason for this confused transference-relationship is not to be found in the analysand’s (assumed) aggressive tendencies (because these are conscious reactions and can therefore not simultaneously be unconscious, one of Morgenthaler’s key insights), Morgenthaler suggests two technical concepts that will help the analyst to relax the analytic situation. First, he emphasizes the metapsychological concept that the unconscious is not only encompassing the id, but also parts of the ego, thereby warning analysts not to rush to make connections to the analysand’s biography. Second, he urges analysts to pay attention to the sequence of what follows what during free association in the analytic situation. This sequentiality of the analysand’s reports, the chapter underscores, corresponds to the unconscious. Thus containing the determining dynamic factors on which the unconscious motivations rest, sequentiality of association is a top priority.
