(2008) presented a model of processes underlying the generation of the P3 in which trial-by-trial changes in P3 amplitudes were explained in terms of an ideal Bayesian observer keeping track of the global probabilities of possible events. Our subjects (n = 16) performed a classical two-stimulus oddball task, while we recorded their brain responses using electroencephalography (EEG). The probabilities of stimulus occurrence were manipulated (p = .5/.5 and p = .3/.7). Grand-average waveforms, individual average waveforms as well as trial-by-trial variations in the amplitudes of the P3 component were strongly influenced by local sequential event structures. Specifically, P3 amplitudes showed sensitivity to variations in the number of presentations of the eliciting stimulus within the series of trials which preceded the eliciting event (Squires et al., 1976). The ideal Bayesian observer model of the generation of the P3 (Mars et al., 2008) cannot account for the effects of the local stimulus sequence on the amplitudes of the P3 component. We conclude that the model needs to be extended to include information about the sequential delivery of stimuli during the recent past prior to the eliciting event.
