Abstract
The nomenclature of Septoria spp. on species of Chrysanthemum is reviewed. The variation in pycnidial size and in spore size and septation was examined in 89 specimens, both exsiccati and fresh material, collected in Britain and in overseas territories; also from inoculations of isolates from the cultivated chrysanthemum ( C. morifolium Ram.), C. maximum Ram., and C. leucanthemum L. on a range of Chrysanthemum spp. and some Compositae. As a result of these investigations, 20 names given to supposedly different Septoria spp. are reduced to S. chrysan-themella Sacc, S. obesa Syd., S. adanensis Petrak, S. leucanthemi Sacc. & Speg., and S. socia Pass, which are retained and re-described. S. socia is recorded for the first time in Britain.
