Abstract

Summary The mechanism for the production of lunar daily geomagnetic variations is discussed. Making reasonable assumptions, it is shown that it is possible to separate the observed variations into parts of ionospheric and oceanic origin. The method is applied to results from six observatories in the British Isles, and the Ocean dynamo part is found to make an important contribution to the total lunar daily variation in all three geomagnetic elements.
