abstract – The purpose of the present study was to investigate possible changes in the rate of collagen formation in the periodontal membrane of the marmoset related to periodontal disease. Nine marmosets were selected for the experiment; four of the animals suffered from periodontal disease with pathologic pocket formation whereas the remaining five showed no signs of periodontal disturbances. The nine marmosets were injected i.p. with 3H‐proline and sacrificed 48 hours after injection. Autoradiographs were made from mesio‐distal sections of premolars and molars and grain counts carried out over standardized areas of the periodontal membrane. The mean grain count from the periodontal membranes of the marmosets with periodontal disease did not differ significantly from the score observed in the control group. The activity around the apical part of the crevicular epithelium was increased in cases of downgrowth. It was concluded that periodontal disease in the marmoset is not correlated with a decrease in the rate of collagen formation in the periodontal membrane.
