Abstract

Abstract In the United States, the phrase “separation of Church and state” draws literally from a famous 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists advocating a “wall of separation between church and state.” Contrary to some popular conceptions, the phrase is not found in the United States Constitution. More generally the phrase “Separation of church and state” represents one of the most important and long‐lasting themes in Christian history.
