Abstract

The production of 236Pu tracer by the reaction 238U(p, 3nβ−)236Pu and of 237Pu tracer by the reaction 237Np(p, n)237Pu using the MGC-20 cyclotron of Abo Akademi and the Cyclone 10/5 cyclotron of the Laboratory of Radiochemistry was carried out. 236Pu was isolated from the irradiated natural uranium target by anion exchange with Dowex 1 resin followed by extraction chromatography using TRU-Spec. resin. 237Pu was separated from the irradiated 237Np target using TRU-Spec. resin only. Separation of 236Pu from tens of milligrams of uranium and fission products as well as of 237Pu from several milligrams of 237Np and fission products, with a high degree of purification, was achieved.
