Abstract

Crystallization behavior of a Cu58Y37Sc5 metallic glassy alloy was studied on heating and on room-temperature deformation by different methods. At first, phase transformations were studied by differential scanning and isothermal calorimetries. X-ray diffractometry studies indicated simultaneous formation of the Cu2Y, CuY and CuSc crystalline phases which is the characteristic of a eutectic crystallization while the isothermal crystallization kinetics rather corresponded to primary crystallization. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy observations revealed a remarkable complexity of this crystallization process including heterogeneous nucleation on pre-existing particles.
