Abstract

Language had to begin with gestures. Language would have happened when a community of hominids about to be human took a new look at the gestures that they and other hominoids had been making for millions of years. All at once—the moment they saw that these gestures represented more than their usual meanings, like “gimme food” or “come closer”—language began.
