Abstract

ABSTRACTAvailable corpus data show that adverbs with modifying meanings, already, also, and only, occur at the clause‐final or sentence‐final position more often in ‘Asian Englishes’ (Hong Kong English and Singapore English) than British English and Canadian English. This paper posits a link between the motivation of sentence‐final adverbs in Asian English and substrate transfer due to linguistic (both grammatical and pragmatic) structures of influential non‐English languages in the regions.
