Abstract

Gifts have a notable ability to stimulate a wide range of emotional responses. They can reveal complex aspects of the character and feelings of both the donor and recipient and can also be instrumental in forging close personal relationships between them. Knowledge of the individuals involved and of the occasion marked by the gift is important in extending our understanding of its intended purpose and ultimate significance. These and other considerations are encapsulated in a recent discovery made on the Berlin art market of a package of thirteen photographic prints by the Berlin photographer Leopold Ahrendts (figures 1, 6–17). Each of these prints bears a hand-written inscription indicating that it was a gift from the ‘Princess Frederick William’ (figures 2, 3). Known also as Princess Victoria, Princess Frederick William was the ‘Princess Royal’, the first child of Queen Victoria and Prince AIbert of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha.1
