Abstract

Although the use of full-thickness human skin organ culture in preclinical research has many advantages compared with the use of reconstructed so-called three-dimensional skin equivalents, it is usually denervated (Zhou et al., 2018). Reinnervation of human skin ex vivo by sensory neurons derived from rat dorsal root ganglia (Chéret et al., 2014; Lebonvallet et al., 2014, 2012) combines cells/tissues from two very different species and requires that rat nerve fibers (NFs), neuropeptides, neurotransmitters, and neurotrophins communicate with cognate human receptors.
