Abstract

The knowledge of the olfactory mechanisms in insects is reviewed an d the mechanism of olfactory reception in mammals is described. No evidence has been found that odors such as urine or sex attractant tap an uniquely sensitive receptor system in the rat as they do in the insec t. There is evidence of selective olfactory processing of some sexually significant olfactory information upstream in the preoptic area the region of the brain implicated in the modulation of sexual behavior. The information already present in the sensory input appears to be selectively processed by way of different neural pathways. The principle of selective filtering even sharpening of certain stimulus features at specialized central nuclei seems a particular feature of vertebrate and mammalian sensory systems.
