Abstract

This paper studies sensor placement and model reduction in the control probrems of flexible beams. In the control of flexible beams, it is important to design the controller which suppresses the spillover instability. Sensor placement varies significantly with spillover phenomena. The proposed method is based on reduced-order models in which frequency responses are dependent on the sensor placement. For stability of closed-loop systems, the frequency region around the crossover frequency is essential. Using the proposed method, we can select the sensor placement and the reduced-order model which give a good approximation near to the crossover frequency. The optimal feedback gain calculated from the reduced-order model can be applied to the original flexible beam system for realizing good damping characteristics. Examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the Proposed method.
