Abstract

RATIONALE: A 20-year-old woman with allergic rhinitis and asthma reported apparent allergic reactions while swimming, beginning as itching of the face and progressing to total body hives and asthma symptoms. The reactions occurred exclusively when wearing latex, but not silicone, swim caps. She had similar reactions to ingestion of avocado and banana, which began after the swimming related episodes. She had swum competitively in high school when the reactions began. She had never had a job requiring latex exposure, nor had she ever had surgery.
