Abstract

The cross-phase-modulation (XPM) effect transfers intensity fluctuation of one optical wave to phase modulation of other waves copropagating in the same fiber.1 This effect can be detrimental to phase-sensitive multichannel lightwave systems operating at near-zero group-velocity dispersion.2,3 Recent computer simulations4 have shown that in IM-DD systems signal-to-noise-ratio degradation due to XPM decreases when the wavelength separation or. the fiber chromatic dispersion increases. This paper describes our experimental investigation of the impact of XPM on multichannel CPFSK optical communication systems with different wavelength separations and fiber dispersion coefficients.
