Abstract
Gunn-diode oscillators, used as self-excited mixers in X-band with 30 MHz intermediate frequency, have been investigated for minimum detectable signal (MDS), conversion loss and AM noise. Low cost, low current-drain, anode heat sink Gunn diodes capable of giving 10 mW output power at a frequency of 10.5 GHz, have been used. MDS of this type of mixer, measured in 1 MHz bandwidth, has been found to be about—88 dBm. This type of inexpensive mixer can therefore be used in many applications requiring receiver sensitivities in between the conventional detector (having about—50 dBm sensitivity) and conventional high-performance external local oscillator mixers (having about—106 dBm sensitivity).
