Abstract
In graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry of alkyltin compounds in organic solvents, addition to the sample solution of organopalladium complexes dissolved in an organic solvent to a final concentration of 10 μg Pd ml −1 was found to improve the sensitivity of the determination of tin. Of six organopalladium compounds tested, PdCl 2(CH 3CN) 2 showed the highest sensitivity enhancement of 19-fold for an ethyl acetate-hexane (3 + 2, v/v) solution of tri- n-butyltin chloride. The enhancement factor was the same for tri- n-butyltin chloride, bis(tri- n-butyltin) oxide, di- n-butyltin dichloride and triphenyltin chloride. The detection limit was 0.11 ng of tin. The method was successfully applied to the determination of total tin leached from ship paints.
