Krishna Kumar, C. ; Thonnard, N. Abstract Thirteen elliptical and SO galaxies in the Virgo and Pegasus I clusters have been mapped over their optical extent in the 21-cm neutral hydrogen line with the 305-m Arecibo telescope. No neutral hydrogen was detected in any of the galaxies, including NGC 4636, which had previously been reported as containing H I. New upper limits to the H I content of these galaxies (∼5 × l07 Msun in Virgo) are presented. We discuss their implications for the origin of type I supernovae and the mechanisms for gas removal from elliptical galaxies.
