Abstract

Although a great deal of effort often goes into the hardware specification for variable frequency drives (VFD), little attention or understanding is applied to how to control the system. The belief is that the hardware of the VFD itself causes the energy savings. The core of the misunderstanding appears to be the term ‘Centrifugal Affinity Laws / Pump Laws’. In this article John Everhart of ITT Industries — Fluid Handling Division takes a look at these ‘Laws’, the assumptions behind them and the savings that can be realistically expected in most systems.
