Abstract

The present article studied the undoped and 1 wt% CdS (cadmium sulfide)-doped SnO2 (tin oxide) based toluene gas sensors. The fabricated samples were deposited using a Screen Printing technique on the alumina substrate. The structural, morphological, and sensing behavior of deposited thick film was observed using XRD, AFM, and locally made chamber. The XRD revealed the crystalline nature and crystallinity were found decreased with small doping of CdS (1 wt%). Crystallite size was found ∼ 57.92 nm and ∼ 51.53 nm for undoped SnO2 (U-S) and 1 wt% CdS-SnO2 (C-S) respectively and confirmed by AFM. The observed particle size was ∼ 75x10-9 m and ∼ 46 x10-9 m for U-S and C-S thick films. The reduction of crystallite size and grain size improved the sensing response for toluene gas at different temperatures of range 150–250 °C. The sensing response value reveals that the C-S sensor is more sensitive than U-S for toluene gas (5000 ppm) at 200 0C.
