Abstract

In the aspect of pollution due to heavy metal ions, especially Pb (II) ions, there is an urgent need for simple, effective materials and processes for sensing the ions. The present study approaches the sensing of Pb (II) ions by non-metal (O, N and S) doped micro and nanoscale Carbon materials. The unique emission (Fluorescence) properties of the as-prepared doped samples of graphene oxides and Carbon Microspheres were tapped in the selective sensing process of nanomolar to the micromolar concentration of Pb (II) ions. The role-play of Carbon dimensionality, functionality and sp2 Carbon density (pi electron density) in the sensing mechanism was evaluated. The study provided an overview of fundamental aspects of heavy metal ion sensing by Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs).
