Abstract

The antennae of male bertha armyworm moths, Mamestra configurata Walker, are setiform and possess, on average, 72 flagellar segments. A terminal organ is found at the tip of the scape as well as three types of sensilla trichodea on each flagellar segment. One type of sensillum chaeticum, two types of sensilla basiconica, one type of sensillum coeloconicum, one type of sensillum styloconicum, and one type of sensillum auricillicum are also found on each segment. Female antennae differ from male antennae in possessing two additional short sensilla chaetica on each flagellar segment and in lacking the long, hooked, sensilla trichodea.
