Abstract
• Direct detection of Gram-negative bacteria may be limited by their low contrast. • The new SensiGram method was evaluated only for positive blood cultures. • Malachite green was just added to Gram stained slides and washed by water. • The counterstain enhances color contrast of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). • Therefore, the modification method substantially increases specificity for GNB.
