Abstract

AbstractThis chapter examines various available options to develop Frege's schematic explication for categorizing the range of particular statements as informative or uninformative as well as to settle questions of identity both between the senses of particular expressions and psychological states. Also demonstrated here is Frege's notion of sense itself with the idea of speakers as creatures subject to psychological limitations. Rather than classifying expressions as identical in sense simply on the basis of a priori equivalence, Frege's writings suggest a view of sense identity at least as strong as one's ordinary concept of synonymy, and very much stronger in the case of an ideal language.
