Abstract

The face and mouth have special biological, emotional, and psychological meaning, and a wide range of sensory functions characterize the orofacial region. This article reviews the features of the somatosensory functions of touch, temperature, and pain in the orofacial region and their underlying peripheral and central neural mechanisms. Attention is given to the unique characteristics of orofacial somatosensory processes as well as to similarities between the orofacial and spinal somatosensory mechanisms.
