Abstract

Most senior doctors in emergency medicine believe that their current workload is unsustainable, and most regularly work in excess of their programmed activities, a survey by the College of Emergency Medicine has found.1 The survey drew responses from 1077 consultants, locum consultants, and associate specialists, of 1536 working in the NHS in England and the devolved nations. More than half of the respondents questioned the long term sustainability of their workload: 62% said that their job was not sustainable in its current form.
