Abstract

Abstract Investigations are reported on the potential use of 32 P labelling to detect senescence onset in flag leaves of winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum ). A mid-term release of phosphate by leaf tissue in incipient senescence is detectable as a sharp (4–5-day) transitory “pulse” of increased count rate in the nodes of representatively labelled laminae soon after anthesis.
