Abstract
Semiphenomenological analysis of cis-to- trans isomerization process of polyacetylene is presented. It is shown that excitation of cis-transoid form to trans-cisoid form is necessary in the course of the isomerization. The probability of tunneling of a π electron from trans-cisoid to cis-transoid state is estimated to be about 0.7 per second. The life time of trans-cisoid form can be inferred to be several hours.
