Semiotics

Abstract

The chapter discusses the contribution of semiotics to translation studies, a contribution which resulted in the establishment of a new subfield, that of translation semiotics. The chapter also raises the issue of the three dominant trends in the field of translation semiotics (interpretative semiotics, the Paris School of Semiotics, and the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics) since within the boundaries of semiotics researchers often apply different theories in their study of translation. Furthermore, methods and topics are presented in the approach to translation based on the thesis that basic semiotic notions contributed to a penetrating approach to interlingual translation. It is also argued that especially the notion of intersemiotic translation contributed to the broadening of perspectives and the development of different research areas within translation studies, such as multimodal translation, adaptation, audiovisual translation, transduction, and transcreation.
