Abstract

Concepts of tolerance and resistance of plants to nematodes are examined on the basis of the recent advances in biology and phytopathology. Accurate vocabulary is needed to progress more deeply in the analysis of the different processes involved. Parasitic relations depend on the genetical background of both the plant and the nematode, which determines their respective biochemical metabolism, physiology, behaviour. Interaction of all these characteristics leads to different types of resistance. Prospects on the different scientific approaches, according to the nature of the phenomena, are discussed. Present and future studies on the hypersensitive reaction are analysed.
