Abstract

Summary The objectives of the present study were (i) to determine physicochemical parameters and (ii) ionic contents of milt and coelomic fluid over a 6 months period. The inorganic ion concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ and several organic components (cholesterol, total protein and glucose) of coelomic fluid and seminal plasma as well as spermatocrit, sperm density, sperm motility and percentage of motile sperms in 30 males and 30 females of Acipenser persicus broodstock were deternined. Spermatocrit values were 4.01 ± 6.6%, sperm motility lasted 317 ± 52.6 s and the percentage of motile sperms averaged 86.78 ± 4.15. Almost 50% of spermatozoa were immotile at 2 min (P 0.05). There were no significant correlations between seminal plasma composition and sperm motility in Acipenser persicus (P > 0.05). Results also indicate a significant and positive correlation between glucose and cholesterol (P < 0.05) and total protein (P < 0.01) both in seminal pelasma and coelomic fluid. The results can be useful in achieving a higher reproduction efficiency in Persian Sturgeon.
